There are lots of RPG maker sort of games on Steam currently (I believe?) and there are lots more who don't make it through greenlight.

Especially if you don't know the software all that well and especially if you're new to game development as a whole.Īnother thing is that if you're planning on earning money through Steam, (as I'm sure you already know) you'll need to put it through Greenlight to get on there in the first place. I would only ever recommend making an RPG to sell if you already have experience or if you are willing to take a few runs at making basic RPGs with your mechanics laid out before starting your final project. While making an RPG in RPG Maker is fun (from what I've seen) it's a very different story if you're trying to sell it as a product. They take a lot of time to plan out completely, they take a lot of time to create art assets for, they take a lot of time to program, they take a lot of time to balance out - you get the idea here. What I can tell you (and what a lot of other people will tell you), from experience, is that RPGs - classical or not are incredibly demanding pieces of work. I'm not familiar with RPG Maker XP at all so I can't comment on it directly, so please take this into account.

It originally released using licensed RPGMaker VX art assets because we had no in-house artists and no budget with which to outsource our art needs.Įven after we released an app update which replaced all the art in 2011 (having hired a full-time art staff by that point) and despite really good initial reviews and great word-of-mouth for the game itself, to this day we (those of us who worked on it still keep in touch, I longer work for SRRN) still get grief over the game being an RPGMaker game despite that we built the game engine ourselves and not once did we touch RPGMaker while building the game. In 2010 I worked at an independent game studio called SRRN Games on their iOS JRPG "Ash". Even if you end up not using RPGMaker, don't use their art in anything public-facing, be it preview media or the final release. Make your own, People can tell a game is used in RPG Maker just looking at it. If you ever do, don't use any of their art assets. PS My general idea is to make classical RPG game, you know, something like Skyrimish or Whitcherish but with(i believe) original and catchy story. So, I thought I can go back to RMXP and do game, because it's easier, so I can do more advanced project.
I've been doing game project in GM:S, but dropped it because I'm not familiar enough with this program to complete game in the way I want. I don't know if I can create THAT great story but I thins I can create something. I've heard about things popular games made in RPG Maker like Ib or To The Moon. I've never relased proper game, because of my flash in the pan and the thing that when I came with an idea I opened RMXP instead of notepad where I could write story and character's portraiture.īut now I am able to calm myself and spend time creating world first. I spend quite long peroid of time during my early peroid of schooling(i was like 11-12) playing with RMXP. My goal in game developing right now is to make successful, not really popular game and earn money via Steam.
